Employee Ownership in America: A Scholarship Opportunity from SES Advisors

Would you like to pursue a career in finance, accounting, employee benefits or law?

We invite you to apply for a $1,000 scholarship by answering the following question in 500 words or less:

According to the National Center for Employee Ownership, there were approximately 10,900 Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) in the United States at the end of 2011. In 1998, there were approximately 11,000. Although the assets held in ESOP plans have increased significantly over that time period, the number of plans has remained stagnant.

During the Great Recession, non-ESOP companies laid off employees at a rate greater than 12%, while ESOP companies laid off employees at a rate of less than 3%. Because employees of ESOP companies were four times more likely to retain jobs during the Great Recession, the Federal government recognized savings of over $14 billion in 2010 compared to tax payments foregone by laid off employees of conventionally owned companies. (Data source: 2010 General Social Survey) So why arent there more ESOP companies in the U.S.?

This scholarship is open to currently enrolled full-time college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, as well as to high school seniors in the United States who will attend college.
